Since the inaugural 500 in 1911, cars had been allowed to make only three qualifying attempts during the entire month -- and to accept only one run. The secret had long been to make sure a car’s qualifying time was fast enough to avoid being bumped later because there were no second chances at Indy. This year, time permitting, each car can make three qualifying attempts on each of the four days -- up to a possible total of 12 runs per car. Cars that are bumped one day can try again -- and again and again. At Indy, a qualifying run consists of four consecutive laps around the 2 1/2 mile oval. Indy officials are hoping the new format will increase the drama -- and the attendance -- on each of the four days of qualifying - Carburetion Day, a Thursday tradition whose name continued long after the cars stopped using carburetors in the late 1940s, has been shifted to Friday, May 27, this year. Once a closed practice session where crews would fine-tune their gasoline-powered engines, Carb Day is now a public party with live music and the 40-lap Menards Infiniti Pro Series Freedom 100 developmental race. - The starting time for the May 29 race will be at noon local time (1 p.m. EDT), an hour later than in past years, in an attempt to increase TV audiences on the East and West Coasts. The 11 a.m. starting time had been a tradition for nearly 60 years. For the first 30 years, before television was a concern, the green flag annually dropped on the Indy 500 at 10 a.m. The later starting time will make it almost impossible for drivers to compete in both the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, N.C., later that same day.
