Grand Prix is the grand pick of the US As eagerly as we tout the virtues of cars like the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, Nissan Altima and Maxima, Toyota Camry and Volkswagen Passat, we know that not every shopper wants a midsize sedan with an import label. Whether it has to do with loyalty to the traditional American brands, distaste for import dealerships unwilling to offer big discounts or a desire to differentiate oneself from the droves of Accord and Camry owners, there are some who simply aren't going to buy one of the recommended picks. And that's fine — there are some domestic sedans that merit consideration even when the imports are still in the picture. The 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix is such a car.
Most of our staff liked the previous-generation Grand Prix (1997-2003), which in GT and GTP form, offered brisk acceleration and a tight suspension for a relatively affordable price. But our fondness didn't blind us to this generation's raucous power delivery, harsh ride over rough surfaces, cheap interior materials, needlessly complex controls and hit-or-miss build quality. "It exhibits strong sex appeal and has moves that can lull you into submission," said one of our editors after driving a 1999 GTP, "but is otherwise harsh on most of the senses most of the time."
